Ursa realised he had been slow on the uptake. They were actually being despatched to punish these same people. The man next to him was right, it made no sense at all.

They came to a halt just before the small beach settlement, sheltered by high dunes, thick with marram grass. The same people who had helped to pull them ashore now began to gather outside their huts, looking on with curiosity. A few others were up to their knees in water, pulling on fishing nets.

As the centurion studied the settlement a curious calm fell over the men. The march had been pleasant. The sun, not too hot, had bathed their backs. The sea now slapped gently on the shore leaving just the murmur of gravel as it moved beneath.
